Software I use

Last updated Jan 4, 2023

Category Tool Why I use it
Operating System Fedora Workstation It’s Fedora, need I say more? I kid. I’m a distro hopper, I’ve used Gentoo, Arch (no link for you), Ubuntu (no link for you), Debian, Fedora, Silverblue, Elementary (no link for you), GUIX, NIX OS (no link for you), Cent OS (rip), Rocky, Void, Alpine, half of the Ubuntu spins (no link for you), most every Fedora spin, OpenSUSE, Zorin (no link for you), Mint (no link for you), Mageia, Clear, TAILS (you have to use tor to access that site), Puppy, and Slax just to name a few. I’ve been around the block a few times. Fedora is stable yet leading edge, easy to use yet extremely flexable, has a lot of software support, has a large community, large corporate backing that hasn’t made the project evil (means the project will last) and incentives such that they probably wont be evil, defaults to only open source software and lets you remove the bloat. It’s the one I recommend to most everyone.
Text Editor / IDE VIM Sorry Emacs your terminal version makes me sad. Using a keyboard driven editor will greatly increase your productivity, and vim or at least vi is installed on almost every unix machine so its worth learning. Come on, install it on your beautiful Fedora Workstation and use vim tutor sudo dnf install vim -y && vimtutor you can thank me later.
Desktop Enviornment Gnome It’s comfy. It’s minimalistic yet does everything I need. Plus I got tired of editing tiling window manager’s config files. It just works1.
Web Browser Firefox / Brave when Chromium 🤢 is required Opensource - Google = :joy: Okay there’s more to it than that: Firefox has more keyboard shortcuts than Chromium which enables faster navigation. For example Ctrl-[ and Ctrl-] to move back and forward through your history. Makes me look like a fancy hacker when I’m really moving fast. As for Brave, it’s chromium without Google and with all the features I’d get form extensions built in.
Password Manager I don’t trust you with that information But seriously. Use one
Email Tutanota Looks nice, isn’t Google, is secure (so they say), opensource, freeish. The keyboard shortcuts make navigation really fast as well. It also loads faster than Gmail.
Search Engine duckduckgo Works great, the themes are nice, and its private. whisper: Did I mention it isn’t Google? It’s keyboard shortcuts allow you to move faster. It very custimizable as well. It’s quick answers feature is more exansive than Google’s, especially in the domains I care about. For example you can get quick answers from stackoverflow
Ad Blocker uBlock Origin Fast, light, works for almost everything, and is a wide spectrum blocker. Everyone not using Brave should install it
Text Messeging Signal The most widely used end to end encrypted service that is free and doesn’t collect metadata ahem Whatsapp.
